BP03: Maintaining Best Practices Throughout Relocation
Eric Williamson, President, Worldwide Environmental Services, WES
Mark Welsko, P.E., Director, Mission Critical Design, Worldwide Environmental Services, WES
In the midst of a major data center move there are frequently so many things screaming for attention that it is easy to ignore issues that don’t seem to be immediate emergencies. But contamination control, thermal maintenance, and configuration planning are all critical areas that cannot be ignored without consequence. A move or major renovation can be a complicated and difficult proposition, but it is also an opportunity to correct many of the sins of the past. This presentation will provide information on often overlooked controls and procedures that should be part of any major move or construction project in a data center.

Data Center World 2005 Educational Tracks: Data Center Facilities
F05: Hardware Reliability: Back-to-Basics
Eric Williamson, President, Worldwide Environmental Services John Teague, Engagement Manager, Worldwide Environmental Services As technology evolves and hardware heat densities increase, the industry struggles to engineer new solutions to address these changes. Often times, the response to correcting environmental issues in the data center is an expensive, over-engineered solution that often does not address the actual underlying problems. This presentation focuses on a back-to-basics approach to correct data center air-conditioning problems using proven, but often missed, techniques developed from real-world experience in thousands of data centers worldwide. The specific areas covered include temperature and relative humidity, hardware airflow and physical configuration, as well as a discussion of some of the external factors that affect a data center’s ability to maintain design conditions. The seminar’s focus on improving the environment without necessarily incurring additional costs makes it a useful tool in helping the members of a facility’s support team develop a comprehensive approach to maintaining high availability.

“Best practices,” “mission critical” and “cost effective” are commonly used terms dominating data center design. But more importantly, how is it successfully applied and put into practice? The Data Center Design Seminar brings together industry leaders in their respective fields to provide the latest instruction in the design of physical plant infrastructure within the data facility.
The Data Center Design Seminar is directed toward the end user community across all vertical markets including financial services, manufacturing, education, security, health care, retail and distribution. The series will also prove useful to the engineering, design and consultant community, providing non–proprietary, real world solutions for data center design.
